The increasing interest of mental health issues in the workplace has been fueled by various trends. Namely, the increasing laws and regulations granting protections to individuals with disabilities of all types, including mental health issues.
In addition, mental health clinicians have become more aware that the mental health concerns of their clients are significantly affected by the workplace, and that treatment that does not include those particular concerns and dynamics, are not likely to succeed.
Work lives and personal lives have become much more intertwined and integrated than ever before. Mental health impairments have become a much broader category, with the DSM-V currently listing nearly 300 mental disorders, and the ADA, along with the passage of the ADAAA, made significant changes to the definition of disability, broadening its scope of protected disabilities, including mental health issues.
